We just got back to our home-away-from-home after Day 2 of the 2017 Ford Men’s World Curling Championship in Edmonton Alberta . It has been a couple of busy days, with the rest of the week to be much of the same. Team Canada 🇨🇦 is sitting at three wins and zero losses, which is great to see. I just hope they continue to stay on their game and take home the gold medal at the end of it all. They had some tough competition this evening against Sweden, and the end result could have gone either way.

In my much younger days I used to think Curling was just luck, but it is so much more than that. The players need to have a strategy, and anticipate the other team’s next move. It is, in essence, much like chess. Without a game plan, the opposition can quickly become undefeated. And everyone knows that having a plan is so much better.

It is much the same when starting a business, whether it be home-based or otherwise. If you are needing to borrow money from the bank, you will be asked to provide a business plan. The bank wants to know your strategy for repaying the loan. Without a plan, chances are you will not get the funding you require. The bank doesn’t lend money to those who just expect to get lucky and make a million dollars.

Even if you don’t need to borrow money from a bank, it is still a good idea to have a plan in place. That way you will know just where to focus your efforts, and have an idea of what to expect. Just like in Curling, having a strategy will help you be more successful. Set some goals, and write out the steps you’re going to take to get there.

Once you have your plan in place, start implementing it. What works? What doesn’t? What changes do you need to make to get to where you want to be?

For me, my biggest barrier is the marketing. I’m sure I have said it before, and I’ll say it again: no one is going to know you exist unless you let them know you do. Show your work, be present on social media and get in front of as many people as possible.

Just like the Curlers do, attend as many events (online or off, depending on the nature of your business) as possible. Use some strategic moves to move up in the ranks of success, and get your own personal gold.

Now, I will leave you with those thoughts because I must get some sleep. Tomorrow is Day 3 and it will be as busy as today.

The photo is from our seats of Day 1. We get the same seats the entire event, so the view won’t change much. The nice part is we are the first row on the second level, so I will never have anyone sitting in front of me that is tall and blocking my view.
